Pope John Paul II And Pope Francis
Were Made Honorary Harlem Globetrotters
Pope John Paul II was named an honorary member of the Harlem Globetrotters in 2000 because he was one of the most well-traveled people of the 20th century. During his 22-year papacy, he visited 122 countries, which is comparable to the Globetrotters' record of playing exhibition games in 115 countries. The Globetrotters said that Pope John Paul II embodied their efforts to provide service, smiles, and sportsmanship globally.
The Pope was given a Globetrotters jersey signed by his new teammates, numbered 75 to mark the squad's 75th anniversary, and an autographed ball.
In 2015, Pope Francis was also named an honorary member of the Globetrotters, becoming the ninth person to receive the honor. The Globetrotters said that Pope Francis embodies their efforts to provide service, smiles, and sportsmanship globally, and they even taught him a few tricks.
