Polar Bears

Can Smell Something Up to Twenty Miles Away

2.jpg

Polar bears have an incredibly acute sense of smell, which is crucial for locating prey and navigating their Arctic environment. They can detect scents from prey or potential food sources over long distances, especially when wind conditions are favorable.

Estimates vary, but polar bears are believed to be able to smell seals, their primary prey, from distances of up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) away, depending on factors such as wind direction and weather conditions. This exceptional sense of smell helps polar bears locate seals on sea ice or near breathing holes, even when they are hidden under the snow or ice.
