Twisted Together
How Pretzels Became a Symbol of True Love
Did you know that the humble pretzel, with its deliciously twisted shape and salty goodness, has a romantic history? Yep, this snack isn’t just a crunchy delight—it’s got some serious heart, too!
The Origin of the Pretzel: A Monastic Creation
Legend has it that pretzels were first created by monks in the 7th century in Europe. These monks, ever so creative, made the dough into a twisted shape to resemble arms crossed in prayer. The name “pretzel” is thought to come from the Latin word “bracellae,” meaning “little arms.” These simple dough twists were given as rewards to children for learning their prayers—so the pretzel has some holy roots!
But how did they become a symbol of love?
Over time, the shape of the pretzel began to take on a new meaning. The twists and loops of the dough were said to resemble the idea of two people’s arms entwined, symbolizing unity and togetherness. In some parts of Europe, pretzels became a symbol of good luck and love, and soon they were associated with marriage as well!
The Pretzel and Weddings: Tying the Knot, Literally!
In Switzerland, couples would traditionally break a pretzel during their wedding ceremony, much like a wishbone. Whoever ended up with the larger half was said to be the one who would “wear the pants” in the relationship—basically, they’d be the boss! This act of sharing a pretzel became a way to symbolize the couple’s "tying the knot" and starting their lives together.
Even today, the pretzel's shape continues to be linked with love and unity, and some couples even use them as part of their wedding celebrations to represent the idea of two hearts (or arms) intertwined.
