Hoopla!
The Quirky Tale of the Hula Hoop craze!
In 1958, Arthur "Spud" Melin and Richard Knerr, co-founders of the toy company Wham-O, took a simple idea and spun it into gold—literally! Inspired by an Australian bamboo exercise hoop, they recreated it in plastic, making it cheap, colorful, and easy to mass-produce. And just like that, the modern Hula Hoop was born!
The hoop became an instant sensation, with millions flying off the shelves within months. Though hoops had been twirled by cultures worldwide for centuries, it was Melin and Knerr who brought the fun, carefree spirit of hooping to kids and adults alike. Thanks to Wham-O, "hoopla" got a whole new meaning, and the Hula Hoop became an iconic symbol of the 1950s!
